The application of 3rd party certification programme in Malaysia

Posted by memories

Certification Authority(CA) is an entity which issues digital certificates for use by other parties. Third party certification is mean the organization is certified by digital certificate and which is trusted party. CAs are characteristic of many public key infrastructure(PKI) schemes. There are many commercial CAs that charge for their services. There are also several providers issuing digital certificates to the public such as Digicert Sdn. Bhd.

DIGICERT is a joint venture company between POS MALAYSIA Berhad and MIMOS Berhad was incorporated in February 1998 to pursue its objective as a premier licensed Certification Authority (CA). As a Certification Authority, DIGICERT is responsible for the creation of digital identities through the use of digital certificates. In other words, digital certificate will address the three critical elements in internet security such as authentication, integrity and confidentiality and non repudiation. DIGICERT is in the center of an effective trust model that the government is creating to address the issue of information security and the negative perception that has been painted in association with online transactions. Digital signatures, encryption, and the infrastructures to support their use are becoming essential for further growth of e-business in Malaysia.

DIGICERT uses PKI-based Identity Management that has distinct entities with defined areas of responsibilities. These entities include Certification Authority (CA), Subscribers, and Relying Parties (RP). Each entity has specific roles, with associated obligations, and may have direct contractual relationships with one another or be non-affiliated. Digital certificate is stored on smartcard for example MyKad, USB token, floppy disk and computer hard disk.
